One Of My Readers....

So this is for paintedbluestars! She just got herself a new Cricut and sent me an awesome email asking for cartridge recommendations. Wow.... that's kind of a brilliant thing to do and I suddenly wish I would have done the same thing back when I first started out, so, I thought I'd post my response to her. Thanks paintedbluestars for sparking a blog post! :)
CONGRATULATIONS!!! I'm so sorry for the delay with this response. I've been sick since before Christmas (can you believe my incredible timing?!?) and JUST NOW got to see a doctor! YIKES... Merry Christmas to me. Luckily for me though, I get to recuperate while watching the Twilight Zone marathon on Sci-Fi this weekend! YAY, just in time for New Years!!! Anywho.... which cartridges you should get is really based on what you are looking to do with your new found gem. If you are just a card maker, I would have totally different suggestions than if you are using your Cricut for scrapbooking layouts or crafting. But since you asked (and I tend to dabble with all of the above) here are my ABSOLUTE favorites and why:

Disney Hannah Montana - ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE. This cartridge has the most AMAZING bang for your Cricut buck. It contains 5 (count em F I V E) fonts as well as cool phrases and really unique images. You will be hard pressed to find duplicates for anything on this cartridge. Now, it does have VERY corny "Hannah Montana cuts", but they are easily ignored since the rest of this cartridge is sheer and utter GOLD. Of course, if you happen to live with a Hannah Montana fan, those oh-so-annoying-and-not-very-realistic-cuts are probably totally forgivable and might even earn you a "mom, you are the best!".

Storybook - Until I discovered the treasure that hid inside the Hannah Montana cartridge, THIS cartridge was my all-time favorite. Again, it contains a font AND uber cool images AND phrases AND.... well, you get where this is going. This cartridge ROCKS! My personal favorite are all the frames on this cartridge not to mention the font is GORGEOUS!!! I use this cartridge quite a bit to add a touch of "design" to many of my projects. Pssst... this cartridge contains the scalloped oval that I use to go with my oval nesties. I think it's the blackout feature on the "W".

Paper Doll Dress Up OR Everyday Paper Dolls - both of these cartridges, while different, have the same theme, paper dolls. I do think the paper dolls are cute and can be used on just about anything, but it was all the EXTRAS on these cartridges that propelled me to stand in line, during the freezing weather (hey, Arizona gets cold too), with a full on Thanksgiving day bloat, to battle some chick who was elbowing me in the ribs, to get my hands on these beauties for $29.99. Now, had I have known that they would be offered for FREE with Cricut rewards points, I might have thought twice and saved myself the aggravation.... NAH... I would have missed out on playing with these cool cartridges for more than a year. Money well spent, and if the chick who elbowed me is reading this now, I'm lookin for you! One of these black fridays I WILL exact my revenge.

Tags Bags Boxes and More - again, this is ANOTHER cartridge that is offered at Cricut.com/rewards, but I'm so glad that I didn't wait. I will say the draw back with this one is that I don't recommend this one for use with the 6" personal cutter. The beauty of this cartridge is making the bags and boxes to put things in to give away. I got this cartridge before I upgraded from the personal cutter to the Expression and can honestly say that I had WAY MORE FUN with it AFTER the upgrade. 6" was just not enough width. A special note here, I found out that I could get my cuts from this cartridge even LARGER with my Gypsy (Design Studio would allow you to do this as well) because I am able to shift and turn images on the virtual mat before cutting. Example: The popcorn box I just posted the other day on my blog was actually about 20% smaller until I "tweeked it" (meaning I just rotated it to fit diagonally). Now it's big enough to hold the full size bag of unpopped microwave popcorn and all the goodies I plan to load inside!

And finally.... Fabulous Finds - there's nothing I like more than interactive scrapbook pages and interactive cards and this cartridge gives me that. From tabs to tags and hidden window cards, this cartridge is everything the title promises it will be.

Well, that about does it for my ALL TIME FAVES. You'll find that I tend to gravitate toward cartridges that give you a lot for the money you spend. Honestly, the 50 images at Walmart for $40 is kind of a turn off and I won't buy the cartridges at Walmart for that price because of it. I did get a great deal this past black Friday when I got a couple of cartridges for $20 each... didn't have to freeze standing in line, Walmart was open all night and elbow chick was no where to be found. I still cringed though knowing that I was only getting 50 images for the same $20 that could have gotten me a full content cartridge (700+ Images) on Ebay for the same pricetag.

A GREAT resource to check out all the cartridges and what is on each cartridge is to go to

  1. Cricut.com
  2. Left click on "Products" at the top of the page
  3. Left click on "Cartridges" off to the left side of the page
  4. Find a cartridge you'd like to explore
  5. Left click the "Details" for that cartridge
  6. Scroll to the top of that page (it will look like a blank page if you don't scroll to the top)
  7. Left click "Digital Handbook". A PDF file will open containing every image available to cut on that particular cartridge.
This will allow you to see EVERYTHING that is on a cartridge before you buy it. Now some of the newer cartridges won't have a digital handbook available simply because they are new and some of the exclusive cartridges (again with the let-down Walmart?) are lacking preview images entirely, but for the most part, doing this should save you some time and money. Trust me on this! There have been a couple cartridges that I wouldn't have bought had I known beforehand everything that was (or was not) on them. Have fun and best of luck with your new toy!!! SOOOOO FUN!

Sincerely,
FitterTwit

How To Upload Gypsy Cut Files To Your Gypsy Updated

Update: Gypsy Sync has been replaced with Cricut Sync but uploading is still quite similar to the original procedure. For more info on the original instructions for Gypsy Sync, click HERE. Also, it is this blogger's advice that prior to installing Cricut Sync, Gypsy Sync should be removed from your system (not a requirement though). Here are the updated steps to upload your favorite Gypsy cut files...

1.) Locate files you would like to upload, most likely from a file-share source (all of mine are with Media Fire). Download, saving the item to your desktop.

2.) Connect your Gypsy to your computer (USB cable) and turn it on then open Cricut Sync. Cricut Sync automatically searches for an update for your Gypsy. If your Gypsy is up to date, you will receive a message stating it is up to date, click "Ok" and a Gypsy Projects list will appear.

3.) From there, click on "Add Projects" and choose the file you saved to your desktop. That's it! :)

Give a try for yourself. All of my cut files can be found half way down the right margin of this blog. Have fun uploading files!!!

New Cut File!!!

SECOND POST FOR TODAY!!! Ok folks... here she is!!! That didn't take as long as I thought! So, I used the Tags Bags Boxes and More Cricut cartridge for the box and then created the popcorn stripes decoration using George and Basic Shapes Cricut cartridge and finally the font for the name was done using the Don Juan Cricut cartridge (name is not included in the cut file).
I plan on filling this with candy and sealed microwave popcorn. I will be altering and embellishing the plastic that wraps the microwave popcorn.... I might have to feature the final product here after the first of the year.... hmmmmmm!!!
Note: Layer 1 is the box, layer 2 is the front strip decoration, layer 3 is the back decoration. Have fun with this one!!!!

Have A Blessed Holiday

So, tomorrow is my 13th wedding anniversary. WHY we decided to get married on Christmas Eve, I'll never know, but while part of me KICKS myself for the added stress of the gift giving and event preparations, there's another part of me that is so glad that my wedding anniversary falls on the night before I celebrate the birth of my Lord, Jesus Christ. But with that being said, I will probably be starting my nervous breakdown any second now, so I thought I'd share my Christmas wishes with you now. I know that I'm rarely very serious in my posts, but this upcoming holiday is a very serious holiday for me. So please be forewarned, this post is not meant to make anyone laugh....

It's been a while since I've posted a Bible study, so I thought tonight I would share a very special scripture with you... My wish is that every one in my blogland family are blessed this Christmas season.

Isaiah 9:6-7
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

For those who read this that may not share in my spiritual beliefs, please take this in the spirit it was intended.... to bless you, as I only want to share a piece of myself with you. May the new year find you all happy and abundantly prosperous. May God bless you and yours.

I praise God for everything he has done and given this past year. I also praise God for everything he has done and given in the year to come... may it be exceedingly abundant. As for every year, I praise God for Jesus. Thank you.

Merry Christmas everyone... thank you so much for taking the time to get to know me and for allowing me to get to know you. You all are SO WONDERFUL!!!

Wish You A Scary Christmas

Ok... this the last challenge over at The Burtonesque Dolls for 2010!!! Using any Nightmare before Christmas Images Create your best Christmas Project with that Burton Flair! This weeks winner will win... Three Exclusive Nightmare Before Christmas Images from Simply Betty Stamps. Oh man.... that's a HUGE prize! Head over to The Burtonesque Dolls and check out what the other awesome design team members created for inspiration.

As for this one.... I KNEW I wanted to use the speckled grey cardstock for this one. I love how it resembles the granite of a gravestone. That's pretty Burtonesque, don't you think? I also found an awesome Engravers Font, but for some reason couldn't get it uploaded to my font folder. Too soon before Christmas for me to want to deal with glitches, so I just settled for an easy holiday font that I already had available. But for the record... the "Happy Holidays" in a tombstone font would have "NAILED" this project!!! Huh... I might just play around with that after all...

Alright.... so now for my project! I am sooooo proud of this project!!! Unlike the other UBER-TALENTED ladies in this hop, I am new to the Make It Crafty stamps! So like many who are hopping, a whole new world opened up when I got the opportunity to see these stamps in action... used with other stamps that I already own and in some cases, had forgotten about. And now I get the opportunity to design with the wonderful artists that opened up that world to me.... well, lets just say, I'm so honored to get to work with these amazing designers! So I think it's appropriate for this hop (our first one!) to share where MY new world is starting. Here is my very-first-ever masking project!!! I happened to have used the AWESOME video tutorial over at Make It Crafty and it worked perfectly.... stay tuned, cuz the tutorial will be posted after the new year!!!

The one tip that I can share that REALLY made this project happen for me, was that I used the Zip 2 Way Glue and "dotted" the glue on the back of my mask (approximately 10 specs of glue for this C.C. Designs Swiss Pixies Ladybug Nora rubber stamp) that I allowed to dry for 5 minutes before "masking" the original stamped image and THEN put through the printer to print out Make It Crafy's Ivy Swing Digi. Once my swing scene printed, the mask peeled off PERFECTLY!!! I was pretty amazed that it was as easy as that!!! Wait till you see the tutorial for yourself.... definitely something to look forward to in 2011!!!

Ok hoppers! The next stop is Irina's AWESOME project (be sure to click on "English" at the top of the right margin if you need the site translated to English)! Have fun on the rest of the hop and be sure to check back in here after Christmas for the announcement of a "surprise" winner here at Fun And Mental Changes.

*** Special Note: You will see in the pic above that I used a sticky note to cut out my mask, but because my laser printer is a commercial machine, I was afraid it might get hung up in my unit if I didn't find a way to temporarily adhere the whole mask. The Zip 2 Way was perfect as it didn't disturb the stamped image underneath.

DIY Goodie Box

Whew! Paper Vineyard challenged us with an All That Glitters Christmas project, and the design team "brought it"!!! Here is my All That Glitters project featuring the store's Shimmers glitter paints and Stickles... God bless the maker of Stickles!!! Anyway, I thought it would be nice to share how I made my Christmas Snowman Goodie Box.

You will need:
  • Super Sticky Tape (red tape)
  • Two 3" x 3" paper (I used patterned and solid papers)
  • Acetate measuring 3.5" x 8.25" scored every 2 and 7/8" (leaving a small section that will be secured with sticky tape)
  • Hole punch
  • Ribbon
  • Ultra fine tip marker
First, score both 3" x 3" papers 1/2" in on all side of BOTH. On parallel sides, cut on score lines JUST TO the intersecting score line creating a tab. Fold up all sides and secure tabs to box sides using sticky tape. Do this for both and you now have a bottom and a lid to your goodie box.

Place a strip of sticky tape along the OUTSIDE, bottom edge of the acetate and along the OUTSIDE edge of the thin strip. Fold acetate to create a box and adhere to one of the folded 3" x 3" papers. You now have the bottom and the body for your goodie box. Now to secure the lid.

Take your lid and punch a hole on two opposing sides. This hole will be used to thread your ribbon through... that is what will be securing the lid to your goodie box. There is no need to adhere the lid. Make sure that the hole is centered on both sides of the lid. Place the lid on top of the acetate and take an ultra thin marker (I used an ultra fine Sharpie) and place a dot on the acetate through each of the holes you just punched in the lid. Remove the lid and use your hole punch where you just marked on the acetate. All the holes should now line up perfectly.

Finally, fill your goodie box and thread your ribbon, first, through the acetate and then through the holes in the lid. Pull ribbon taut securing the lid and tie the end of the ribbon in a bow or a knot. This creates a nice handle if you want to hang a little goodie on a friend's door. Since the lid is not glued, it is easily removed to get to the goodies!!!
A special thanx to my good blog friend The Canadian Nickel for the AWESOME video tutorial! The instructions were perfect and she made this project super easy!!! To check out her awesome video, click HERE!
Welp, that is it for today's uber-fun project. Be sure to check out Paper Vineyard's blog to see all the AWESOME All That Glitters projects created by the design team. Be sure to enter the challenge over there for your chance to win the HUGE Bo Bunny Prize Bag Paper Vineyard is giving away!!!

Oogie Boogie Christmas

Isn't it funny how Oogie Boogie and Christmas just works... well, in that creepy sort of way anyway!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA! So over at The Burtonesque Dolls this week, the challenge is to create a Christmas project featuring the beloved Burton villain, the Oogie Boogie Man! Wow, this one was SOOOOOO fun!!! I just wish I would have had the extra time to photograph this with the gummy worms in it. That would have been the added touch to make this one even "Oogie Boogieier" <--- that's totally a word! BUT, I ran out of time. So HO, HO, HO and head over to The Burtonesque Dolls, play along with us and check out what our awesome design team turned out for this uber fun challenge...uh... please.

*** My project is featuring an Oogie Boogie cut file I created along with the OH-SO-AWESOME Dollz Bonez Skull Flower digi stamp (click on pic to enlarge)! Using the Tags, Bags, Boxes and More Cricut cartridge made this project a snap... it's a quick one for anyone thinking of turning out a few for office pals! Adding the gummy worms will make it rock!!! LOL! Either your office pals will LOVE receiving this and you'll be the office superstar, or they will shun you and you will eat lunch alone because you scare everyone. Really, it could go either way. But let me know if anyone's interested in this SCAL cut file. Have a great one gang! :)

Well Dang!

A while back I received some blog awards, but life around here preparing for the upcoming Christmas holiday has been so chaotic, I COMPLETELY missed thanking those who honored me with this award. I've met quite a few amazing people here in blogland and they don't come better than the three who gave me this award.... "THANK YOU" to :

I so appreciate that you guys think my blog is Stylish... especially since all of your blogs blow mine out of the water!!!! If all of you get a chance, be sure to check out their AWESOME blogs for some REAL style!!!

So, as part of this award I have to pass it on to 8 blogs and tell 8 things about myself... here goes! 8 Things about me:

  1. I LOVE to laugh.
  2. I LOVE to make other people laugh.
  3. I'm rarely funny when I'm trying to be.
  4. I can't tell jokes because I laugh too hard while trying to tell them which then causes me to forget parts of the joke and usually the entire punchline.... which, in and of itself, is pretty funny.
  5. I try VERY hard not to take myself or others too seriously.
  6. I believe that those who have to be offended are offensive.
  7. I believe that we search in vein for healing (as we are already equipped with that) and that the true search needs to be for the proper environment and the right circumstances to heal.
  8. I believe in God and that Jesus has blessed me with real happiness.

WHEW! Now for some REALLY stylish bloggers:

A Piece Of My Scraps

Beaner's World Of Paper Crafts

Chilli Pip

Crafty Little Pigtails

Glittery Katie's Blog
